Rarely had I seen so many colourful flower boxes on house fronts as in Notting Hill. The lanterns were black and of simple London elegance, which could not necessarily be said of the colourful house fronts. But I liked them because they radiated liveliness.

In Notting Hill we found a quaint pub where we stopped for dinner. I had a surprisingly good chat with Felix and the food tasted good too. Afterwards, we made our way back.

When we arrived at the hotel, there was no trace of Hugo. Felix was as perplexed as I was as to where he could be, but unlike me, he wasn’t worried and just said that Hugo was like a cat, he loved roaming the streets, but in the end, he always returned home.

Not entirely convinced, I retreated to the bathroom and took a shower. It was one of those rain showers where the water came down like a thick curtain. I closed my eyes and imagined all my problems being washed away and disappearing down the drain. Glug. Glug. Glug. Away with the problems.

A few minutes later, with a towel wrapped around my head, I stood in front of the fogged mirror and wiped it clean with the palm of my hand. As always, big brown eyes were looking back at me, but today they didn’t look like Bambi’s, who had just lost his mother. Today they shone and somehow, I didn’t find my freckles horrible anymore. No, they suited me and my mahogany-coloured hair.

When I came out of the bathroom, I was alone in the room. At first, I didn’t see Felix because the light was on inside and so the room was reflected in the windowpanes, but then I noticed the glowing dot on the balcony, dancing like a firefly.

I stepped out, barefoot. Felix was sitting relaxed on a chair, his gaze fixed in the distance.

“What are you doing?” I asked redundantly, as it was impossible to miss that he was smoking.

He took another drag. The distinctive smell of grass rose to my nose. I waved my hand in front of my face to drive it away.

“Want a drag?” He held the joint out to me provocatively and looked at me imploringly. “Come on, Mia, I dare you. You need to loosen up.”

I started to reply that it was too unhealthy for me, but Felix interrupted me with a mocking grin. “I knew you were too uptight for that.” The stem glowed as he took another drag. Slowly, he exhaled the smoke.

Without suspecting it, Felix had used almost identical words as Laura. We were fourteen, it was June and we had been to Sandra’s birthday party. She had invited a few boys from our class as well as Tanja and Marie and we were playing truth or dare. When the bottle pointed at me, I chose dare because I was afraid that if I picked truth, I would have to confess that I was secretly in love with Jonas. But the dare turned out to be just as bad because the task was to run around the block once in my underwear.
